PERFORMING LIVE! – IN NEW ORLEANS
Paul Mooney C-O-N-S-C-I-O-U-S: The National Wake Up Tour featuring Paul Mooney and Dick Gregory kicked off at the Black Repertory Group Theater last month for 8 sold-out shows. Famed comedic social commentators Mooney and Gregory aimed barbed wits at …the upcoming election & other current issues while RAISING FUNDS for the nation’s Oldest Black Repertory Group.
“Our community theatres and effective community centers most in need, in the cities we tour are what we have our Lend A hand sites on. So many people talk about what’s not being done, Dick and I talking about what needs to be done and we are doing something about it! We plan to meet needs in our communities nationwide with this tour! Dick and I are visiting jails and/or senior centers on the tour with messages of unity. It only takes A spark to ignite an entire Forrest and many of our people are certainly lost in the woods. Maybe others with star status will join in”.-Paul Mooney
“PLEASE YA’LL! Don’t come looking for the kings of comedy or any other step n fetch it comedic act! Our crowds are leaving the show knowing they were fed intellectually. We had ‘em in stitches in Berkeley CA and more importantly the sold out crowds left knowing the tax-deductible ticket they acquired allowed them to fulfill their civic responsibility while joining the revitalization efforts in their own community. We are taking alot of pictures so bring your camera, come laugh and reflect on historical, as well as current events, while of course, getting the hard truth from both Paul and myself.”-Dick Gregory.
C-O-N-S-C-I-O-U-S: The National Wake Up Tour combines the forces of two legends known equally for their comic skills and unflinching social commentary. Louisiana born Fabled writer, Grammynominated comedian, and actor Paul Mooney pulls no punches as he puts history and the upcoming presidential election in his sharpened, sardonic sights. Drawn from a career with beginnings as a groundbreaking African-American circus ringmaster and leading to years of notoriety as a comedy writer, Mooney’s words have filled the mouths of Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, and the cast of In Living Color. He is best known to modern audiences for his blistering work on Chappelle’s Show, his standup act skewering tender subjects like an accident-prone luau master while drawing on a deep and heartfelt sense of history.
As a self-described “drum major for justice and equality,” Dick Gregory found himself at the forefront of the civil-rights movement in the 1960s, during which he participated in countless protests and even ran for president. His career has been a unique blend of political activism and controversial yet insightful anecdotes. Hugh Hefner admired these courageous observations and jump-started Gregory into mainstream territory by having him perform at the Chicago Playboy Club in 1961. More than 50 years later, Gregory continues to regale audiences with an act more entertaining and educational than a college professor wearing a bear suit. Don’t you miss the next stop in THE BIG EASY (FOR 2 SHOWS) – KICKING OFF the ESSENCE MUSIC FESTIVAL WEEKEND, Thursday July 5th, in New Orleans at the W Hotel A benefit for the YMCA (http://www.dryadesymca.com/content.php?fcn=donations). Made in New Orleans.org adopts the Healthy Economics Model for Sustainability

Made in New Orleans.org is dedicated to building a sustainable New Orleans and a sustainable planet.

MadeinNewOrleans.org has adopted the Healthy Economics Model for Community Development as a plan towards developing sustainable communities by improving the schools in these communities first.

Healthy Economics is designed especially for lower income communities often defined as food desert neighborhoods, because it starts with low cost social enterprises (i.e. farmer markets/school gardens / cooperative grocery stores) that engage the schools extended family to increase the circulation of the dollar within these neighborhoods.

Why Healthy Economics?

Healthy Economics is defined as “the day a community, once termed low income is a normal, self- sufficient community.” We believe with all the wealth in the Bay Area, no community should go underserved.

The Familyhood Connection Inc, uses four main programs to build the Healthy Economics Model. These four programs are: Mo’ Better Food (builds school gardens and farmers markets), Friends of School (develops school leadership, PTA’s, Alumni), The Intergenerational Enterprise (brings community partners to create social enterprises from the organizations above) and the 1st Saturdays program (a website that reminds the above participants to volunteer once a month).

In a nutshell, Healthy Economics main focus is building partnerships from the schools extended population to improve the communities food system by managing school gardens, farmer markets and cooperative grocery stores.

For more information about the above programs, please visit their site.
